São Paulo Research Residency: Critical Pedagogy & Field Research in Brazil
MALT 610 reimagines the MALT capstone as a 7-week summer intensive built around a 14-day faculty-supervised research residency in São Paulo. In partnership with Mackenzie University and the Paulo Freire Institute, students investigate critical pedagogy, democratic education, and practitioner inquiry through cross-cultural seminars, school and community site visits, and collaborative research alongside Brazilian graduate students and scholars.
Travel dates: May 31 - June 13, 2027
Course dates: May 8 - June 19, 2027 (7-week course)

Brazil Program Highlights
While in Brazil, students will live at ULiving São Paulo, a modern, student-centered residence that houses international students from around the world and offers daily opportunities for cross-cultural connections.
As part of the experience, you'll:
- Visit the Paulo Freire Institute to explore the legacy of critical pedagogy and its relevance in today's classrooms and communities
- Collaborate at Mackenzie University through discussions, workshops, and joint research projects with Brazilian peers and faculty
- Experience Brazil's premier art collection at the Pinacoteca do Estado (Pinacoteca Museum), engaging with works that illuminate identity and history
- Take a day trip to the Guarujá beaches for a cultural and environmental perspective along São Paulo's sparkling coastline
Past Trip: Study Away in Cuba
Over the past few years, students have participated in a two-week trip to Cuba, living with Cuban families while studying the history, politics, and social institutions that shape Cuban society. Students visited schools and universities, engaged with citizen groups, toured the world-renowned Latin American School of Medicine, and explored Cuban history through an overnight visit to Playa Girón (Bay of Pigs) and a trip to a tobacco farm.
