Dressed for success

When political science and public policy major Gaby Herrera ’25 talks about stepping into a career in government and law, she emphasizes the importance of a good first impression.

“Representation matters, especially for people who come from underserved, disadvantaged groups and may not get a lot of opportunities to make a good first impression,” Herrera said.

Along with many University of Redlands students, Herrera recently participated in the Office of Career & Professional Development’s (OCPD) annual JCPenney Suit-Up event. The event offered exclusive discounts on professional attire and, for some students like Herrera, scholarships funded through donors and grants in the form of gift cards to pay for their purchases.

“To me, the scholarship means having the opportunity for myself and other students to look professional,” Herrera said.

“Suit Up is an opportunity to help our students feel confident going into an interview or stepping into a professional setting,” OCPD Director Jim Dusserre said. “If that means getting a new jacket, dress, or pair of pants, we’re here to help make that possible.”

That sentiment resonated with biology major Karen Casso ’26, who’s eyeing a future internship at Loma Linda Medical Center.

“I strongly believe that first impressions make a difference,” Casso said. “In thinking about the internship, the outfits I selected will help with that impression going into interviews and boost my confidence.”

Senior Associate Director of OCPD, Luke Gorham, Ph.D., echoed those thoughts.

“It’s really helpful to have this kind of support, especially for students who might be navigating the professional world for the first time,” Gorham said. “It makes you feel seen, and that the University is invested in you.”

For the past seven years, OCPD has partnered with JC Penney on the Suit Up event as one of many resources it makes available to students and alumni. From resume-building to networking opportunities with industry leaders, OCPD continues to professionally prepare Bulldogs to impact their careers and communities.
